Scope

Replacement of the existing excitation system of the generator in the Unit No. 5 with a new digital static excitation system with two automatic redundant channels AVR/FCR, model CONTROGEN HX, made by Alstom Poloni, brand of Alstom Franc with much better performance than the old system and operation reliability twice higher than the old system in order to increase the generation availability of the electric power from the Unit No.5 in Vau Dejës HPP

Main activities

On site supply and installation of the generator for the Unit No.5 in Vau Dejës HPP, commissioning, tests under load and tests at no load, according the IEC standards and technical specifications, training of the technical personnel and tests with load of the new digital static excitation system with two redundant automatic channels CONTROGEN HX. After final tests, Unit No.5 was put on operation for the 72-hour load test on August 21, 2015, at 09:00 o’clock. Unit No. 5 with the new excitation system operated normally, it completed successfully the 72-hour test under load on August 24, 2015, at 17:00 hours and continues normal operation according to the requirements of the dispatcher regime.

Results and Expectations

The new system has a number of advantages as compared to the older system, in particular:

• Contemporary quality and parameters for regulating output voltage of the generator.
• Increase of the static and dynamic endurance of the Albanian Power System as a result of high amplification and
stabilisation of system fluctuations.
• High security and availability of the hydro-unit operation.
• Different from the existing system (mono-channel, technology of the ‘90’s) the new system is a product of the latest
generation and represents a high level technological improvement, because the new system has a totally digital design
and is equipped with two AVR automatic redundant channels with reservation from the FCR manual channel and with
two rectifying 3-phase bridges with fully controllable thyristors.
