Commercial Activity
KESH (Albanian Power Corporation) is the public producer as well as the largest producer in Albania, focused on fulfilling the public service obligations imposed on the corporation and surplus energy trading within the internal and external market. After 2 difficult years of hydrological drought (2019-2020), the first half of 2021 was characterized by highly favorable meteorological conditions with heavy precipitation events that were reflected in the increased energy generation by the hydropower plants of the Drin River Cascade.
Furthermore, the corporation took special measures in the management of heavy precipitation events to not only increase energy generation, but also carefully manage the water discharges in order to avoid potential risks of flooding in the Shkodër-Lezhë lowland region.
As a result of the optimal operations management, KESH managed to increase the energy generation by 49% more compared to the multi-year reference data (1993-2020), providing more energy for the public service obligations and the ancillary services for balancing energy. In addition, the corporation took a proactive trading approach in the free market in order to increase the company’s revenue, minimize energy import, and to maintain a low cost of energy for OSHEE (Electric Power Distribution Operator).

- The revenue from Energy Sales in the Deregulated Market in the 1st half of 2021 was 55.7 Million EUR, equivalent to 81% of the total revenue of 2018 (a favorable hydrological year).
Transactions for Optimization
The optimization of energy trading provides KESH with additional revenue through the profit made by the sale-purchase price difference without affecting the energy reserves of the Drin River Cascade. The optimization process (when the system allows it) focuses on the formula where energy is purchased during the night (when prices are lower) and selling the same amount at a higher price during the day.
